Why this site exists

Because the question “will this cart actually work with my kayak?” is genuinely hard to answer, and almost nobody was trying to answer it properly.

The problem

Search for a kayak cart and you will find a dozen near-identical articles listing the same eight products in a slightly different order. Read carefully and you notice something: they publish contradictory capacities for the same SKU. One page says a cart carries 170 lb; another says 300 lb. Both imply the author used it. Neither states a source.

Meanwhile the actual failure modes are specific, documentable and largely absent from those articles. A cart tips on soft sand because the wheels are 65 mm wide. A strap slips because the supplied buckle has no teeth. A scupper cracks because the posts were never fully seated and the hole rim took the load — and the manufacturer then declines the warranty claim, because cart damage to scuppers is user-caused and dealers recognise the crack pattern on sight.

None of that is mysterious. It is just work nobody was doing. So the honest gap in this category is not another ranked list — it is a kayak model by cart model compatibility database with real load maths, explicit evidence grades, and the discipline to say “we do not know” when we do not know.

What actually goes wrong

Ranked from what owners report most often. The site is organised around these, not around product categories.

  1. Sand and mud defeat the cart

    Narrow hard wheels dig a trench instead of rolling. This is the single most common complaint and the one most often glossed over in reviews.

  2. Straps slip and the boat shifts

    A slipping strap drags the cart rearward and tips it. Several supplied buckles have no teeth and pop open under load.

  3. Things break

    Kickstands collapse, axle housings crack, foam pads tear, folding joints loosen. Nyloc nuts still back off.

  4. The cart does not actually fit the hull

    "Universal fit" is a marketing phrase. Flat pads under a rounded hull contact a narrow strip and concentrate load.

  5. Sand and grit get into the bearings

    The launch environment is abrasive by definition, and few carts are designed for it.

  6. Salt corrodes it

    Steel frames rust. Manufacturers recommend a corrosion protectant and buyers find out later.

  7. It will not fit in the boat

    If the cart cannot come with you, you are walking back for it.

  8. Capacity is understated against real rigged weight

    A rigged fishing kayak weighs far more than its listed hull weight, and cart ratings are quoted for flat ground.

  9. Loading solo is awkward

    Most guidance assumes two people and a flat car park.

  10. You cannot tell whether the price is justified

    Contradictory specifications make comparison impossible.

An honest note about this page

The previous version of this site carried an invented author biography — a fictional named person with a fabricated history. It has been removed, and this paragraph replaces it. We are not going to swap one invented persona for another.

KayakCarts.net has been publishing on kayak transport since 2011. The site is currently a small independent research project: no manufacturer owns it, no retailer funds it, and it has no affiliate relationships at all today.

What we contribute is not paddling celebrity. It is source discipline — reading manufacturer documentation, warranty positions and owner reports carefully, recording where each figure came from, and refusing to fill gaps with plausible guesses. Where we have judged rather than measured, the page says so.

How you can improve it

Owner data is genuinely valuable here, particularly the measurements manufacturers refuse to publish: scupper diameter and spacing, real weighed rigged weight, and whether a specific cart fits a specific hull. A measurement with a photograph of the measurement being taken can move a record from inferred to community verified — and community-verified fits are moderated against the same evidence rules as everything else.
