Where the cart goes

Most “this cart is unstable” complaints are positioning problems, not cart problems. A cart placed 30 cm out from where it should be turns a boat you can steer with two fingers into one that fights you the whole way down the track.

The principle: just aft of the balance point

You want a small, steady downward force at the bow handle — enough that the boat stays put when you let go of it briefly, light enough that you are not lifting it. That happens when the cart axle sits slightly behind the centre of mass of the loaded boat.

The two ways it goes wrong

Rough starting point

On most sit-on-top fishing kayaks, the cart ends up somewhere between the seat back and roughly a third of the way from the stern. Treat that as where to begin the search, not as an answer — hull shape and where you stow your heavy gear both move it.

Finding it on your boat, once

    Load the boat as you cart it

    Crate, battery, rods, water — everything that rides along. An empty boat balances in a different place.

    Find the balance point by hand

    Standing beside the boat, slide your hands along the gunwale and lift until it balances level. Mark that spot with a strip of tape on the hull.

    Set the cart 10–20 cm aft of the tape

    Start there. You want a light but definite weight at the bow handle when the cart takes the load.

    Check what is underneath before you lower it

    Pads must land on solid hull. Not the drive well, not the rudder assembly, not a transducer shield, not a hatch lid.

    Strap it, then test

    Lift the bow and rock the boat firmly side to side. If the cart moves relative to the hull, the strapping is wrong — fix it here, not on the beach.

    Mark it permanently

    Once it works, a small piece of coloured tape or a paint pen dot means you never do this again. Re-check after any significant rigging change.

What a cart must never bear on

A pad sitting on any of these concentrates the entire loaded weight of the boat onto something not built to carry it. This is how carts crack hulls.

Pedal drive wells

A large unsupported opening mid-hull. Loading across it flexes the surrounding deck.

Rudder and skeg assemblies

Positioning too far aft can put load through the rudder mount rather than the hull.

Transducer shields and thru-hulls

Protruding and often the first thing a pad finds on a rounded stern.

Hatch lids and rims

Lids are watertight covers, not structure. A cracked hatch rim is a leaking boat.

Non-structural scupper holes

Never assume a scupper is reinforced. Most are moulded drains.

Keel strips and rocker extremes

A pad only touching a narrow keel line means the load has almost no contact area.

Scupper carts: the load path is everything

If you use a plug-in scupper cart, the posts must be fully inserted with the collars seated so the crossbar carries the load — not the post tips wedged inside the scupper tube. Hobie state plainly that cart damage to scuppers is not a warranty matter, and bulging around a scupper is the warning sign that precedes cracking. Fit a keeper pin so posts cannot bounce out.

Strapping, briefly

Strap slip is the second most common complaint we found, and it is closely linked to positioning — a correctly balanced cart puts far less shear into the strap in the first place. The essentials:

  • Thread the strap back through the buckle slot so it locks. A buckle with no teeth relies entirely on correct threading.
  • Run the strap through the carry handles, not just around the hull, so it cannot migrate along a smooth wet boat.
  • A 25 mm (1 inch) cam strap is the usual upgrade. Several carts ship without straps at all.
  • Tension it, then walk two metres and re-tension. Straps bed in.
  • Never rely on a cart strap for roof transport. Different job, different load.

Positioning cannot rescue the wrong cart

If the pads do not match your hull shape, or the cart is over its capacity, no amount of careful placement fixes it. Check the pairing first.
